How the calculator works

Net position = sale price − selling costs − settlement amount.

A positive result indicates estimated positive equity. A negative result indicates an estimated settlement shortfall. Cash required is the absolute value of a negative result.

The result is only as current as the figures entered. Vehicle-finance settlement quotes normally have limited validity periods. Absa currently states that its settlement quotes are valid for six days, while Standard Bank states five working days for its process. Use the expiry date and payment instructions on your own lender's written quote.

What the result means

Positive equity

Positive equity means the expected net sale proceeds exceed the settlement amount. The surplus may be available after the lender, sale costs and any other agreed deductions have been paid.

Settlement shortfall or negative equity

A settlement shortfall means the net sale proceeds are not enough to settle the finance agreement. Confirm with the lender how and when the difference must be paid before agreeing to hand over the vehicle.

Do not treat this estimate as lender approval.

The finance institution is normally the titleholder while the vehicle remains financed. Confirm the settlement, payment route, proof required and document-release process directly with the lender before concluding a sale.

Figures the calculator does not include automatically

  • Interest or charges that accrue after the settlement quote expires.
  • Early-settlement charges or adjustments shown on the lender's quote.
  • Dealer deductions not included in the headline offer.
  • Repairs, roadworthy work, licensing arrears or traffic-related amounts.
  • Insurance cancellation amounts, warranty refunds or other product adjustments.
  • Tax consequences for a business-owned vehicle.

Before accepting an offer

  1. Request a current written settlement quote.
  2. Check the quote's validity and payment reference.
  3. Get the sale offer and all deductions in writing.
  4. Confirm whether the buyer or dealer will pay the lender directly.
  5. Agree how any shortfall will be funded before handover.
  6. Verify cleared funds independently with the receiving bank or lender.
  7. Complete the lender's document-release process and the normal ownership-transfer steps.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the outstanding account balance?

No. Use the amount on a current settlement quote. The account balance displayed elsewhere may not include every amount or adjustment required to close the agreement.

What happens if my cash available is less than the shortfall?

The calculator will show the uncovered difference. Do not proceed on the assumption that the lender will release the vehicle documents. Contact the finance provider to discuss the permitted settlement process and your options.

Is a dealer offer always worse than a private sale?

Not necessarily. A private sale may produce a higher headline amount, but it can also involve advertising, preparation, time, viewings and payment risk. Compare the net figures and the practical risks, not only the headline offer.

Does paying the settlement amount transfer ownership?

No. Settlement clears the finance account, but the lender's document release and the applicable registration and ownership-transfer process still need to be completed. South African government guidance states that a financing institution is the titleholder of a financed vehicle and that registration and licensing after a change of ownership should be completed within 21 days.
