What to prepare before selling your car
A strong car sale enquiry should make it easy for a buyer, dealer or partner to understand the car quickly. The more complete your information is, the easier it is to compare offers and avoid delays.
The most important details are usually the car’s make, model, year, mileage, condition, service history, finance status, roadworthy position and location.
Private sale, dealer offer or trade-in?
A private sale may achieve a higher price, but it usually requires more time, messages, viewings and negotiation. A dealer offer or trade-in may be simpler, but the offer may be lower because the dealer needs margin and may take on risk.
If the car is still financed
If the car is still financed, be careful. You should understand the settlement amount and how the finance will be cleared before ownership is transferred. Do not treat a financed vehicle like a simple private sale unless the settlement process is clear.
Documents sellers should think about
- Vehicle registration certificate or relevant NaTIS papers.
- Proof of identity and seller details.
- Service history and invoices where available.
- Roadworthy certificate position.
- Finance settlement letter if the vehicle is still financed.
- Proof of purchase or sale agreement for the transaction.
