Annual vehicle licensing
Renew your car licence online or in person, prepare the right documents and understand the 21-day grace period.
South African motor vehicle licences must be renewed annually before expiry. There is a 21-day grace period calculated from the expiry date shown on the current disc. After that period, arrears and late-licensing penalties can apply.
You can use the official online NaTIS service, an appropriate registering authority or a designated post office where that service is available. The route, documents and delivery method can differ, so check the current local or online requirements before paying.

Grace period
Renew within this period to avoid the late penalties and arrears that apply after the grace period.
No notice?
Download an electronic notice where available, or complete the ALV form for an in-person renewal without the notice.
The renewal date is tied to the expiry date printed on the vehicle licence disc. National guidance gives a 21-day grace period after expiry. That grace period does not extend the licence for another month; it is a limited window in which to renew without late penalties and arrears.
Online document checks, payment issues, address mismatches and local queues can delay completion. Start before expiry where possible, especially when the vehicle record or owner details may need correction.
If a vehicle licence has not been renewed for more than four years, the vehicle's registration can become null and void. That is no longer a routine annual-renewal problem and should be resolved with the registering authority before the vehicle is used or sold.
Register or sign in, view eligible vehicle renewals, verify the vehicle and owner details, pay through the portal and select the available delivery option.
Open official online NaTISTake the renewal notice or ALV form, identification, address evidence and payment to the appropriate vehicle-licensing office. National guidance says the in-person application is normally processed on the same day.
National guidance permits renewal at designated post offices. Branch participation and document requirements can vary, so confirm the service before travelling.
Some authorities provide their own electronic, postal, delivery or collection arrangements. Use the authority responsible for the vehicle record and verify its current instructions.
Use the official online NaTIS portal and complete the identity and contact verification requested.
View vehicles linked to the profile and select the eligible renewal.
Verify the licence number, vehicle description, owner details, contact information and address before proceeding.
The portal should show the licence fee and any arrears or penalties recorded against the transaction.
Complete payment only inside the official portal and retain the receipt or transaction reference.
Follow the option offered for the transaction and make sure the delivery address is correct.
Verify the vehicle, expiry and licence details, then display the new disc as required.
The RTMC describes online NaTIS as the official service that transacts directly against NaTIS. Be cautious with third-party renewal websites, added service charges and unclear data-handling practices.
The exact checklist differs by applicant type and office. The table below reflects the common national and provincial requirements, but the relevant authority remains the final source for the transaction.
| Item | When it is used | Preparation note |
|---|---|---|
| MVL2 renewal notice | Shows the vehicle and renewal assessment. | Use the electronic or issued notice where available. |
| ALV form | Replaces the renewal notice for many in-person applications. | Complete the Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle when the MVL2 is unavailable. |
| Owner identification | Confirms the person linked to the vehicle record. | Take the original and any copies or certification required locally. |
| Proof of address | Confirms or updates the residential and postal details on NaTIS. | Check the permitted document age and affidavit rules before attending. |
| Authorisation documents | Needed when another person acts for the owner. | Common requirements include a permission letter and certified owner identification. |
| Organisation and proxy documents | Used for a company or other organisation-owned vehicle. | Confirm the business certificate or BRNC, proxy authority, proxy ID and address evidence required. |
| Roadworthy status, where applicable | Required for public-transport and certain heavy vehicles before licensing can be printed. | Resolve the roadworthy requirement before the renewal transaction. |
| Licence fee, arrears and penalties | Settles the amount recorded for the renewal. | Confirm accepted payment methods and the current amount. |
Renewal notices are not a legal substitute for checking the disc yourself. Where available, download the electronic notice from online NaTIS. For an in-person transaction without the notice, complete the ALV form and take the supporting documents required by the office.
Missing reminders often point to outdated mobile, email or address details. Update the information on the vehicle record during the next transaction and verify it before leaving the office or completing the online process.
Some authorities allow an authorised representative. Western Cape guidance, for example, asks for a permission letter, a certified copy of the owner's ID and the representative's ID. Confirm the rules for the office you will use.
The registered proxy or representative normally manages the transaction using the organisation's business or BRNC records, proxy authority, identification and address evidence.
The lender may be the titleholder, but the customer is generally the registered owner and remains responsible for annual licensing. Contact the lender if the record, certificate or titleholder details are disputed.
National guidance requires valid roadworthiness before licensing for public-transport and heavy vehicles. Buses require six-monthly licensing because their roadworthy certification is valid for six months.
Expect arrears and penalties to be added. The total is determined from the vehicle record and local fee schedule, not a single nationwide flat amount.
Simply parking the vehicle does not automatically stop annual licensing liability. Ask the registering authority about deregistration or other applicable status before arrears accumulate.
There is no single nationwide vehicle-licence price. The amount can depend on the province, vehicle type, tare or mass, licence period and any arrears or penalties. Online delivery or a third-party service may also add a separate service charge. Use the amount shown on the official renewal assessment or obtain it from the registering authority.
No. The vehicle licence and disc relate to the car's licensing record. A driving licence card relates to the individual driver's authority to drive.
Yes. Renewing before expiry avoids the risk of a failed transaction pushing the vehicle outside the grace period.
The grace period is intended to allow renewal without late penalties. It should not be treated as a reason to delay, and enforcement or insurance questions can depend on the exact circumstances. Renew as soon as possible and retain proof of the transaction.
National guidance says the application is processed on the same day when the transaction and supporting requirements are in order. Queues, system issues and record problems can still affect the visit.
Do not assume so. Even where the bank is titleholder, the registered owner normally manages annual vehicle licensing unless the finance agreement or fleet arrangement says otherwise.
Government registration guidance says the vehicle's registration becomes null and void after more than four years without renewal. Contact the registering authority for the correct re-registration or status process.
